Learn Carpentry

Master hand and power woodworking tools, timber selection, joinery techniques, furniture assembly, hinge installations, and surface finishing.

The Core Principle:Measure Twice, Cut Once -> Square the Stock -> Cut Joints -> Dry Assemble -> Glue & Fasten -> Sand & Finish
Note: Always wear safety goggles and dust masks when operating power saws, routers, and sanding machinery.

Course Curriculum

Chapter 1: Timber Types, Woodworking Hand Tools & Joinery

Goal: Identify engineered and solid woods, master hand tools, and cut precision woodworking joints.

1.1 Timber Selection & Board Dimensioning

  • Understand materials: Solid hardwoods (Teak, Sheesham, Oak), softwoods (Pine), and engineered boards (Plywood, MDF, Particle Board).
  • Wood grain orientation: Account for wood movement, moisture expansion, and face-grain orientation.
  • Measuring and marking tools: Use steel combination squares, marking knives, and tape measures for accurate layout marks.

1.2 Precision Hand Tools & Wood Joinery

  • Chisels and hand planes: Sharpen and hone bevel-edge chisels and bench planes to produce paper-thin shavings.
  • Classic woodworking joinery: Cut accurate Butt joints, Lap joints, Pocket-hole joints, Mortise & Tenon joints, and Dowel joints.
  • Clamping & gluing techniques: Apply PVA wood glue evenly and clamp joints with uniform pressure without twisting assemblies.
Assignment: Cut, assemble, and glue a square wooden frame using lap or pocket-hole joints, verifying 90-degree square corners with a combination square.

Chapter 2: Cabinet Hardware, Power Tools & Surface Finishing

Goal: Operate power tools safely, install hinges and drawer slides, and apply protective surface finishes.

2.1 Power Tools & Cabinet Hardware Installation

  • Power tool safety: Master circular saws, cordless impact drills, orbital sanders, and plunge routers.
  • Install cabinet hinges: Mount concealed Euro cup hinges (35mm) and adjust alignment across 3 axes for level cabinet doors.
  • Install drawer slides: Measure, level, and mount soft-close telescopic ball-bearing drawer slides.

2.2 Surface Preparation & Finishing

  • Progressive sanding: Sand surfaces through progressive grit sequences (80 -> 120 -> 180 -> 220 grit) to remove tool marks.
  • Wood filling: Match wood putty colors to fill screw holes, nail indentations, and surface seams.
  • Finishing applications: Apply wood stains, clear polyurethane coats, laminates, and edge-banding tapes.
Assignment: Build a small wooden storage box or utility shelf with sanded surfaces, installed hinges, and a protective clear coat finish.
