Basic Plumbing
A beginner-friendly practical certification covering household plumbing systems, piping materials, tap repairs, bathroom/kitchen installations, and leak troubleshooting.
Course Curriculum
Chapter 1: Introduction to Plumbing
Goal: Learn what plumbing is, common household plumbing systems, safety rules, and how water supply and drainage work.
1.1 Household Water Supply & Gravity Drainage
- Understand water supply: Overhead gravity tanks, booster pumps, and municipal water line pressure.
- Understand drainage systems: Soil, waste, and vent pipe layouts, traps (P-trap, S-trap), and preventing sewer gases.
- Plumbing safety rules: Using eye protection, handling blowtorches safely, and wearing cut-resistant work gloves.
Chapter 2: Plumbing Tools
Goal: Identify and correctly use essential hand tools and diagnostic plumbing equipment.
2.1 Essential Hand Tool Identification & Safe Use
- Pipe wrenches: Using 10-inch and 14-inch pipe wrenches correctly to grip round metal pipes without slipping.
- Adjustable wrenches: Using smooth-jaw adjustable spanners on chrome-plated bathroom fixtures to avoid scratching surfaces.
- Cutting tools: Clean pipe cutting using ratchet PVC cutters, metal hacksaws, and internal deburring tools.
Chapter 3: Pipes & Fittings
Goal: Understand different pipe materials and fitting configurations.
3.1 Material Properties & Fitting Selection
- Material properties: PVC (cold drainage), CPVC (hot/cold water lines), UPVC (exterior supply), and GI (galvanized iron).
- Fitting selection: When and how to use 90-degree elbows, 45-degree sweeps, equal tees, reducing couplers, and unions.
- Thread sealing: Applying Teflon (PTFE) thread seal tape clockwise around male threads (6 to 8 wraps) to ensure leakproof joints.
Chapter 4: Tap & Faucet Repair
Goal: Learn how to repair leaking taps and replace internal cartridges.
4.1 Faucet Maintenance & Cartridge Replacement
- Diagnosing tap leaks: Pinpoint worn rubber washers, damaged O-rings, and cracked ceramic disc cartridges.
- Disassembly steps: Remove decorative caps, unscrew spindle lock nuts, and extract cartridges without damaging faucet bodies.
- Spout aerator cleaning: Clear mineral buildup and hard-water sediment from faucet aerators to restore clean water flow.
Chapter 5: PVC Pipe Installation
Goal: Master PVC solvent welding and dry fitting.
5.1 Solvent Cement Welding Steps
- Dry fitting: Measure and dry-assemble all pipes and fittings to verify angles and lengths before applying adhesive.
- Surface preparation: Clean pipe ends with solvent primer to remove grease and soften plastic surfaces.
- Joining technique: Apply solvent cement evenly, push pipe into fitting with a quarter-turn twist, and hold firmly for 30 seconds.
Chapter 6: Bathroom Fittings
Goal: Install wash basin faucets, angle valves, showers, and health sprays.
6.1 Bathroom Fixture Installation
- Angle valve installation: Install 1/2-inch chrome angle stop valves on water inlet lines using Teflon tape.
- Health faucets and flexible hoses: Connect braided flexible hoses with rubber washers without over-tightening.
- Shower heads and arms: Install wall-mounted shower arms and overhead rain shower heads at proper heights.
Chapter 7: Kitchen Plumbing
Goal: Install kitchen sinks, waste couplings, and bottle traps.
7.1 Sinks & Waste Traps
- Sink waste coupling: Seal stainless sink couplings using plumber's putty or silicone gaskets to prevent under-sink leaks.
- Bottle trap setup: Install and align bottle traps to maintain water seals that block foul sewer gases.
- Flexible drain hose routing: Connect corrugated flexible waste pipes into wall drain sockets with airtight rubber grommets.
Chapter 8: Leak Detection
Goal: Locate hidden water leaks and repair damaged pipes.
8.1 Leak Diagnostics & Joint Repair
- Locate hidden leaks: Use pressure gauges and moisture meters to detect leaks behind tiles and inside walls.
- Repair damaged sections: Cut out cracked pipe sections and install slide slip-couplers or compression fittings.
- Temporary emergency fixes: Apply self-fusing silicone repair tape and pipe repair clamps to control high-pressure leaks.
Chapter 9: Household Maintenance
Goal: Maintain water heaters, unclog drains, and service overhead tanks.
9.1 Preventative Maintenance & Drain Clearing
- Clearing clogged drains: Clear sink and floor drain blockages using hand drain snakes and plunger tools.
- Water heater maintenance: Inspect pressure relief valves and flush sediment from geysers annually.
- Overhead tank maintenance: Clean sediment from tanks and service float ball valves to prevent overflow.
Chapter 10: Practical Assessment
Goal: Complete real-world practical projects to earn your PTEarn certification.
10.1 Practical Capstone Demonstration
- Project 1: Replace a leaking washbasin faucet and its flexible angle valve connections.
- Project 2: Measure, assemble, solvent-weld, and mount a 1-meter PVC pipeline section.
- Project 3: Install an under-sink bottle trap and test it with a full basin water discharge.
